Welcome to the Institute of East Asian Studies

The Institute of East Asian Studies of the University of Cologne is home to both Japanese and Chinese Studies.

Japanese Studies was introduced to the Institute of East Asian Studies in 1978. The Foci of Research and Teaching are Popular and Media Culture in the Modern Period (since 1603) and Japanese Didactics.

Chinese Studies, previously Sinology (introduced to the University of Cologne in 1960), is one of the largest German Institutions of research and teaching related to China. Today, Modern History/Politics, Economics and Society, Chinese Culture as well as Chinese Legal Culture are, in addition to language teaching, included in the curriculum.
